Wednesday's last visit to Cardiff

Winning in the Millennium
Last May the Owl's beat Hartlepool in the play off final at the Millennium Stadium to win promotion to the Championship. It ended a two year stint in the third tier of the football league.

It was many years before though that they last came to Ninian Park. The 12th of May, 1984 to be exact. On what was the last day of the 83 / 84 season the Yorkshiremen were in party mood as they had already been promoted to the old first division. City were mid table and the result mattered little as far as promotion / relegation was concerned.

For Wednesday though they could have been crowned Champions. They were level on points with Chelsea but behind on goal difference.

The game at Ninian Park ended with Wednesday winning 2 - 0. The happy Owls were just waiting to hear how Chelsea had got on at Grimsby. In the days before mobile phones it took a while for the news to come through that Chelsea had won 1 - 0. No league title for Wednesday but promotion nonetheless.

And so it's taken another 22 years before the teams cross swords at Ninian Park again.

As for the other teams mentioned they could hardly be any further apart. Chelsea as we all know are now top of the Premiership while Grimsby (who finished 5th in 1984 (before play offs) are now fighting to get out of the 4th tier of the football league, they are currently in the play off positions.
