The tough tackling defensive midfielder has agreed to join Cardiff City after beinbg released by Sunderland.

He played 35 times for Sunderland last season as they marched to the Championship title. The Zambian born Whitley is a Northern Ireland international, he's scored two goals for his country including one aginst Wales last Autumn.

His signing appears imminent after the player agreed to sign and Sam Hammam today told the Echo

'The chances are high that we will sign Jeff Whitley from Sunderland. He is a tenacious, ball-winning midfield player with a good work ethic, a no-nonsense player in the centre.

'He has been released by Sunderland and we are delighted he is joining Cardiff City.'

Whitley was also part of the Manchester City team that won promotion from the old Division 1 to the Premiership. Let's hope he can make it a hat trick of promotions.

Official news of his signing should follow later.
