Whittingham saw some action in one of the group games whilst away.
Now the players are starting to return to Ninian Park for the new season but Whittingham will be allowed to join up a bit later.
"I've been in contact with Peter in Holland almost every day," Dave Jones told the official website www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk
"He has been in regular training so the last thing he needs is to come back and do a hard pre-season.
"So he will now have a break, he won't be coming back when we report in.
"He will probably join up with us when we go to Portugal and then we'll see what level of fitness he is at.
"But I know that he is keen to get back and have a good full season after joining us from Aston Villa last January."
