Cardiff City started the new year with a frustrating 1-1 draw at Wycombe Wanderers as they failed to grow their lead at the top of League One.

The Bluebirds were the better team for much of the contest but Wycombe -managed by former Swansea boss Michael Duff - held firm to gain a valuable home point.

Chris Willock gave the visitors a perfect start when his deflected strike in the sixth minute made it 1-0.

Joel Colwill was inches away from doubling the lead in the 21st minute when his shot struck the crossbar as Brian Barry-Murphy's side continued to apply pressure.

Wycombe got back into the game in the unlikeliest of ways as Caolan Boyd-Munce scored directly from a corner.

The 25-year-old's set-piece seemed to disappear through a crowd of players at the near post and ended up in the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Both sides had chances to take three points in the second half, but Barry-Murphy will feel his side missed out on two crucial points as they failed to convert some golden opportunities.

Callum Robinson and Yousef Salech had attempts cleared off the line by the hosts as Cardiff searched desperately for a winner.

Callum Chambers fired narrowly wide in stoppage time as the league leaders failed to increase their lead at the top of League One with second-place Lincoln City also being held to a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town.
