Jack Moylan feature. Such a good player

The Irish midfielder is making his mark in South Wales, and a productive international break could provide the perfect springboard for another big performance at Blackburn.

When Cardiff City signed Jack Moylan from Lincoln City in August, the Bluebirds were bringing in a midfielder with a reputation for contributing goals and creating opportunities. Just a few weeks later, he is beginning to look like one of the most important players in Brian Barry-Murphy's side.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed an encouraging start to life in South Wales, but it was his performance against Charlton Athletic in September that really caught the eye. With Cardiff still searching for their first league victory of the campaign, Moylan stepped up with two goals and an assist in a convincing 3–1 win, finally giving the Bluebirds the breakthrough they desperately needed.

It was the sort of performance that can change the way supporters view a new signing. Moylan had already shown flashes of his ability, but against Charlton he delivered the end product to go with his movement, energy and attacking intent.

International recognition brings further rewards

Moylan's form has not gone unnoticed in the Republic of Ireland setup. Having made his senior international debut earlier in 2026, he returned to the national squad for a busy September and October Nations League programme.

He featured in all four of Ireland's matches during the window, initially coming off the bench in the defeat to Kosovo before earning a starting role against Israel, Austria and Israel again.

His standout display came in the 3–0 victory over Israel, when Moylan scored a goal and provided an assist. It was an important contribution in a comfortable Irish win and another indication of the attacking threat he can offer when given the freedom to influence a game.

Ireland's subsequent matches against Austria and Israel finished 2–2 and 1–1 respectively, with Moylan starting both fixtures. The volume of football he has played during the international window should give him valuable experience, while competing at international level offers another opportunity to develop his understanding of the game.

For Cardiff, there is an obvious benefit. Moylan returns with more minutes under his belt, confidence from a goal and an assist, and further experience of performing in competitive matches under pressure.

More than just a goalscorer

Moylan's early Cardiff statistics underline why he has become such an important figure. He has started all eight of the club's Championship fixtures so far, scoring three league goals and registering an assist.

But his value is not simply about the numbers.

Moylan offers Cardiff a player who wants to get on the ball and make things happen in the final third. He can contribute himself, but he also provides a link between midfield and attack, helping turn possession into meaningful opportunities.

That creative responsibility is becoming increasingly important for Barry-Murphy's side. Cardiff need players who can unlock organised defences, make decisive runs and provide a bit of unpredictability in attacking areas. Moylan has already shown he can offer those qualities.

His previous experience at Lincoln City also suggests that his current form is not a flash in the pan. Before moving to Cardiff, he made 129 league appearances for the Imps, scoring 24 goals and providing 10 assists.

That record points to a player who has developed his attacking instincts over several seasons rather than someone relying on a brief spell of good fortune.

Can Moylan carry that form into Ewood Park?

Cardiff return to Championship action on Saturday with a trip to Blackburn Rovers, and Moylan looks set to be central to their plans.

The international break has interrupted the club season, but it has also given Moylan the opportunity to maintain his competitive rhythm. His performances for Ireland will have done him no harm, and the challenge now is to bring that confidence back into the Cardiff side.

Blackburn will present a different test from the one he faced against Israel, but Moylan's ability to arrive in dangerous positions, combine with teammates and contribute directly to goals makes him a player the home side will need to watch closely.

There is still plenty of football ahead, and it would be premature to place the entire creative burden on one new signing. However, Cardiff have been searching for players capable of turning promising passages of play into goals, and Moylan is already showing that he can be part of the answer.

For a summer arrival, he has made a significant impression in a short space of time. The Charlton performance announced his potential to the Cardiff support, and his international exploits have reinforced that impression.

Now comes the next step: delivering consistently in the Championship.

If Moylan can reproduce even some of the confidence and attacking quality he showed during the international window, Cardiff could have a key player capable of making the difference as the season develops. Saturday's trip to Blackburn offers him the perfect opportunity to continue that progress.
