Mansfield extended their unbeaten run to six games when finishing the season by beating promoted Cardiff in a nine-goal thriller.

The Stags led 3-0 at half-time at Field Mill thanks to Ryan Sweeney's early header and a quickfire double by striker Lucas Akins.

Isaak Davies' crisp finish cut the gap with half an hour remaining only for Mansfield to settle any nerves thanks to Rhys Oates' calm dink.

Omari Kellyman benefited from a Liam Roberts clanger to make it 4-2, but the Bluebirds, who finished second behind champions Lincoln, were beaten when Ollie Irow cut in from the left wing to score in the 80th minute.

Ronan Kpakio and Kellyman struck, but Championship-bound Cardiff could not grab an unlikely equaliser.

Mansfield finish 10th in League One after a season that included a memorable FA Cup run and a tie with Arsenal.

The Stags led inside two minutes when, just seconds after Jon Russell was denied by an excellent Harry Tyrer save, Sweeney outmuscled Joel Colwill to nod in Nathan Moriah-Welsh's cross at the far post.

Mansfield broke away to double their advantage in the 23rd minute with Akins staying calm to finish from Louis Reed's pass after Wales centre-back Dylan Lawlor gave the ball away.

It was soon 3-0 with the striker smashing in with his left foot shortly after having a shot cleared off the line.

There was a predictable reaction from Cardiff at the start of the second half and Ollie Tanner hit the bar with a thunderous left-footed shot approaching the hour.

The Bluebirds did reduce the deficit shortly afterwards when substitute Davies found the bottom left corner of the goal with a fierce drive.

Any hope of a comeback was swiftly ended with another Stags breakaway, Oates racing free from Reed's pass and then superbly lofting the ball over Tyrer after the goalkeeper had slipped.

Back came Cardiff with a clanger by Stags goalkeeper Liam Roberts, who allowed Kellyman's soft shot to go through his hands and legs.

Mansfield secured the three points in the 80th minute when Tottenham loanee Irow was allowed to cut inside and drilled a shot past Tyrer.

Kpakio followed up to finish after Tanner was again denied by the bar and Kellyman scored again in the second of six added minutes.
