Chopra scored twice for City at Merthyr 10 days ago and then flew to Portugal as a City player.
"When I played at Merthyr in pre-season and flew-out with Cardiff for Portugal I was looking forward to starting the season at Ninian Park," stressed Chopra.
"I was determined to beat last term's 22 goals and felt that the 30 mark was well within my grasp.
"Then it was only when I had a text from my fiancee on the Tuesday morning saying that she had heard I was going to Sunderland, that my mind started racing.
"I rang my agent to see what was happening and by the evening the gaffer told me that the club had accepted an offer and I was on my way."
