Croft has been training with City while out of contract as he attempts to make a return after a serious knee injury. He made a couple of appearances for the reserves during pre season but he has opted to go on trial at Grimsby.

He played last night for the Mariners, a club he left in 1996 to join Blackburn. Ironically it was against Blackburn in last nights pre season friendly that he played his first game for Grimsby in nearly 10 years.

Croft set up Grimsby's opener but Blackburn came back to win 2 - 1.

Loan player Michael Boulding, who was at Ninian Park for a short while at the end of last season, is set to retire from football.

He's been on loan at Crewe but looks like giving up to concentrate on matters outside of football.

"He told me he was going to retire because he didn't want to sit on the bench all season - or drop down the divisions,: said Crewe boss Dario Gradi.

"It's a shame, but I understand his decision and I think he runs a property business which he can concentrate on.

"The lad also lives in Sheffield, so it's a long way to travel if he isn't playing regularly. He's a very nice lad, I have grown to like him and I would like to wish him all the best."
