Super Saturday sees Cardiff almost over the line

To be honest Cardiff have probably won promotion already. With five games still to play City could feasibly lose all of them and the three teams who could still mathematicaly catch Cardiff would probably struggle to overhaul the points gap.

The win on Saturday means City have an 11 point lead over Bolton who have just four games remaining. So they need to win all four without Cardiff getting a point.

Bradford, who are the closest to City, 10 points behind, also only have four games to play. So they are in the same boat at Bolton. Only four wins will do providing Cardiff fail to earn another point. (Cardiff have such a big goal difference that matching the points total would not be enough).

The outsiders, but ironically most likely to have half a chance are Stockport. They are a massive 14 points behind but have six games to play. So five wins could see The Hatters pass Cardiff's current points tally. But that's a big ask and it assumes City capitulate. No one is taking those odds.

Cardiff are away at Huddersfield on Tuesday. A Bluebirds win coupled with Stockport failing to win at Wimbledon on Wednesday would see Cardiff promoted on the final whistle at Plough Lane. Cardiff cannot mathematically get promoted on Tuesday.

But fans want to be in a stadium when promotion is achieved so maybe a combination of results that see Cardiff given the chance to earn promotion at Reading next weekend would be an ideal outcome.

I think we have moved into the When not If line of thinking.
