The Championship Play Offs Are Changing

Last Updated : 07-Jun-2026 by Michael Morris

Beginning with the 2026–27 season, the Championship will adopt a six?team play?off system, expanding from the traditional four?team format used since 1987. The EFL’s decision marks one of the most significant structural changes in decades.

Why the Change Was Made

The EFL cited several motivations:

Increased competitiveness: More clubs remain in the promotion race deeper into the season

Commercial value: Additional high?profile matches generate more broadcast and matchday revenue

Fairness: The gap between 3rd and 8th has narrowed in recent years.

The New Format

1. First Round – Eliminators (One?Off Matches)

5th vs 8th

6th vs 7th

Played at the home of the higher?ranked team.

2. Semi?Finals – Two Legs

3rd place plays the lowest?ranked eliminator winner

4th place plays the other eliminator winner

3. Final – Wembley Stadium A single match to decide promotion.
